Nikkei 225 — daily market movers

Macro backdrop

The Nikkei 225 rose 1.26% to close at 65,020.94 on 4 Sep (+806 points), even as TOPIX was roughly flat — a narrow, top-heavy advance led by a handful of tech heavyweights, recovering from the prior day's one-month low. SoftBank (+11.78%) was the single biggest driver after its chip unit Arm gained about 3.3% overnight on AI optimism, dragging the whole AI-semiconductor complex higher; advancers outnumbered decliners (1,989 to 1,446). Wall Street's overnight strength helped, but gains were capped by expectations that the Bank of Japan will raise rates (a firmer yen), in contrast to a cautious Fed. Japanese trading houses reversed the prior session's Berkshire-driven rally, and chemicals and defensives lagged.

Common Themes

The gainers are overwhelmingly a single technology/AI cluster: SoftBank (via Arm), memory (Kioxia), electronic components (Taiyo Yuden, Murata, Minebea Mitsumi), chip-packaging substrates (Ibiden), AI-data-center cabling (Furukawa Electric), plus software (Trend Micro, SHIFT). SoftBank's Arm-driven surge set the tone and dragged the whole AI-semiconductor supply chain higher, so most of these names moved on the theme rather than on standalone news. Japan Exchange Group is the outlier, lifted by record trading volume and a spike in volatility rather than the AI trade.

    Meiji Holdings
Food, confectionery and dairy maker with a pharmaceuticals arm
Defensive food/confectionery-and-pharma name declined in the rotation out of defensives into technology.

Common Themes

Three overlapping threads run through the losers. First, the sogo shosha trading houses (Mitsui, Mitsubishi Corp) unwound the prior session's Berkshire-driven pop on profit-taking. Second, chemicals and materials cyclicals (Sumitomo Chemical, Mitsui Chemicals, Mitsubishi Chemical Group, Mitsubishi Materials) were sold as part of a rotation out of value. Third, defensives (Tokyo Gas, Nissui, Meiji Holdings) and shipping (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines) were rotated out of. A firmer yen on Bank of Japan rate-hike expectations added pressure on exporters and commodity-linked names. None of the decliners showed a clear standalone company catalyst — the moves are rotation-driven.

Overall read

Money rotated decisively into AI and technology and out of value, cyclicals and defensives. Even though the Nikkei closed up 1.26%, that advance was narrow and top-heavy — driven by a handful of tech heavyweights led by SoftBank — while TOPIX was roughly flat, showing the breadth was thin. The Berkshire-fueled trading-house trade unwound, and Bank of Japan rate-hike and yen-strength expectations weighed on exporters and commodity-linked cyclicals.
