Market Movers

S&P 500 — daily market movers

Macro backdrop

Narrow, tech-led tape. The S&P 500 finished essentially flat while the Nasdaq rose about 0.45% to eke out another record close and the Dow slipped roughly 0.36%. AI enthusiasm kept leading -- Meta's new Muse AI agent stoked the AI narrative -- while crude oil slid on optimism over U.S.-Iran diplomacy, and small caps outperformed (Russell 2000 up ~0.8%). The move lifted memory and power-chip names, but breadth stayed narrow and money left rate-sensitive financials/insurers, software/ad-tech and energy. The backdrop remains a hawkish Fed after its recent 25bp hike.

Top 10 gainers

  • 1. MPWR+8.06%
    Monolithic Power Systems
Power-management chips (voltage regulation) for AI servers, computing and autos
Rode the AI-chip rally on strong AI power-demand optimism, fresh bullish analyst calls and a new partnership/foundry tie-up.
  • 2. SNDK+6.82%
    Sandisk
NAND flash memory and storage products such as SSDs and memory cards
Part of the memory supercycle -- tight NAND/DRAM supply and rising prices -- with storage buying concentrating in the name.
  • 3. LEN+6.38%
    Lennar
One of the largest U.S. homebuilders, building and selling single-family homes
Berkshire Hathaway disclosed it lifted its stake above 10%, overshadowing a weak Q3 print and another delivery-target cut.
  • 4. MRNA+5.56%
    Moderna
mRNA vaccines and oncology therapeutics developer
Extended its rally on a recent FDA approval and positive oncology pipeline developments.
  • 5. MU+5.00%
    Micron Technology
DRAM and NAND memory chips, including high-bandwidth memory for AI
Memory supercycle -- DRAM/HBM shortage, rising prices and AI memory demand -- lifted the group ahead of earnings.
  • 6. STX+4.85%
    Seagate Technology
Hard-disk drives and mass-capacity storage for data centers
Storage/memory rally on AI data-center demand and tight supply.
  • 7. TER+4.49%
    Teradyne
Semiconductor and electronics automated test equipment
Rode the AI-semiconductor rally as test-equipment demand tracks memory and AI capex.
  • 8. ALGN+4.36%
    Align Technology
Invisalign clear dental aligners and intraoral scanners
Gained with a rotation into healthcare; no clear standalone catalyst on the day (likely a bounce/rotation).
  • 9. AMGN+4.34%
    Amgen
Biotechnology drugs across oncology, inflammation and biologics
Benefited from a defensive healthcare bid; no single dominant catalyst identified.
  • 10. MTD+4.22%
    Mettler-Toledo International
Precision laboratory and industrial measurement instruments
Part of the healthcare/instruments rotation; no standalone news catalyst (likely rotation/technical).

Common Themes

Five of the ten gainers are AI-chip / memory-storage names -- MPWR, SNDK, MU, STX and TER -- riding the continued AI-hardware bid and the ongoing DRAM/NAND memory supercycle. The rest are idiosyncratic or defensive: LEN on Berkshire's stake increase, MRNA on a recent FDA approval, and a healthcare cluster (ALGN, AMGN, MTD) that looks more like rotation than fresh news.

Top 10 losers

  • 1. GEN-6.38%
    Gen Digital
Consumer cybersecurity software (Norton, Avast, LifeLock)
No standalone news catalyst; a valuation/technical pullback after recent gains amid a broad software selloff.
  • 2. GDDY-6.23%
    GoDaddy
    Domain registration and web-hosting/small-business software
Pressured by analyst-downgrade fallout and a lawsuit overhang, alongside the wider software selloff.
  • 3. RCL-6.14%
    Royal Caribbean Cruises
    Global cruise-line operator
Fell with a consumer-discretionary/travel selloff; no clear standalone catalyst (sector/technical).
  • 4. SCHW-6.11%
    Charles Schwab
    Brokerage and wealth-management firm
Hit by the hawkish-Fed rate backdrop (deposit-sweep margin worries) and rotation out of financials into tech.
  • 5. ALL-5.50%
    Allstate
    Property & casualty insurance
Sold off in the broad rotation out of rate-sensitive financials and insurers into tech.
  • 6. TTD-5.04%
    The Trade Desk
    Programmatic digital-advertising demand-side platform
Weighed down by index-removal concerns and cost cuts/layoffs.
  • 7. CHTR-4.94%
    Charter Communications
Cable broadband and pay-TV provider (Spectrum brand)
Fell on weak broadband/cable subscriber trends and ongoing cord-cutting and competition concerns.
  • 8. DELL-4.59%
    Dell Technologies
    PCs, servers and AI-server infrastructure
Profit-taking pullback after its AI-server run amid hardware/software rotation churn.
  • 9. ADBE-4.52%
    Adobe
Creative and document software (Photoshop, Acrobat)
Sold as AI-disruption fears and a cautious outlook/CEO-transition overhang hit software while AI hardware rallied.
  • 10. CSCO-4.50%
    Cisco Systems
    Enterprise networking hardware and software
Rotated out with legacy tech/networking; no standalone catalyst on the day (sector move).

Common Themes

The losers split into two clusters: rate-sensitive financials/insurers (SCHW, ALL) pressured by the hawkish-Fed backdrop and rotation into tech, and software/ad-tech/legacy-tech names (GEN, GDDY, TTD, ADBE, CSCO, DELL) sold as money concentrated in AI hardware. Consumer-travel (RCL) and cable/media (CHTR) round out the weakness, the latter on soft broadband trends.

Overall read

Another 'AI hardware over everything' session: the Nasdaq scraped out a fresh record on the ongoing AI/memory bid, but breadth was narrow -- the S&P was flat and the Dow fell. Money rotated into semiconductors, memory and storage and out of financials/insurers, software/ad-tech, media and consumer-cyclicals.
